Top Ten Fairy Tale Retellings
Five Favorites & Five I Want to Read

1. Of Beast and Beauty by Stacey Jay - I read this book earlier this year, and I couldn't think of a better introduction to Stacey Jay. I loved the writing and creative twist on the familiar story of Beauty and the Beast!

2. Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine - I read and loved this book when I was younger (along with Just Ella), but I think I appreciated it even more after my recent re-read. It's such an amazing Cinderella retelling!

3. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas - I almost didn't include this fantasy favorite since it's a very loose retelling, but I decided it still counts. You can see the hints of Cinderella in this story, which was Maas' original inspiration.

4. Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier - If I could only choose one favorite retelling, it would be this book. I fell in love with the entire Sevenwaters series, but this retelling of The Six Swans was the standout for me.

5. Scarlet by Marissa Meyer - I wasn't crazy about the start of this series, but this book totally won me over! I love how Meyer introduced Little Red Riding Hood into this world - there's so much creativity and complexity.

6. The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale - I can't remember what brought this book to my attention, but I think it was Amy's post about it. It sounds lovely! It's based on the fairy tale of the same name, which I haven't read.

7. Princess of Thorns by Stacey Jay - After loving the first book I read by Jay, I put this on my wishlist. I've heard from Alexa that this fairy tale twist/retelling is even better, and I can't wait to find out for myself!

8. Heart's Blood by Juliet Marillier - I'm a new fangirl of Juliet Marillier, and this is one book I'd love to add to my shelves. I have no doubt this will be an unforgettable and gorgeous take on Beauty and the Beast.

9. Grounded: The Adventures of Rapunzel by Megan Morrison - I added this to my wishlist after reading Morgan's update when she finished. She completely sold me on this Rapunzel retelling in just two sentences!

10. Uprooted by Naomi Novik - This is another Morgan rec! When she tweeted me to tell me that I had to read this book, I couldn't resist. I don't know if it's inspired by a particular fairy tale, but I think it has that vibe.

  2. Such a wonderful post and list! Ella Enchanted is a forever favorite for me. Like you, I fell even more in love when I reread it this year! And Throne of Glass can totally count ;) Such a good choice. I love the Lunar Chronicles series but think Cress is my favorite. I need to finish DotF and try Of Beast and Beauty! Princess of Thorns and Goose Girl are two on my TBR as well. Will be anxious to hear your thoughts on Heart's Blood, it sounds intriguing! Eeeep two shout outs! I really hope you like both books. They seem like Hannah books to me! And good to know I can give a good rec in a couple sentences :D Hehe. Because I'm obnoxious, I have another for you ;) It's a historical fantasy Rumplestiltskin retelling https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1743390.A_Curse_Dark_as_Gold?ac=1

  3. YAY! I love your list! I have Of Beast and Beauty on my TBR because I loved Princess of Thorns so much, so we're mirror image twins! Discovering Stacey Jay was a wonderful surprise for me as well. I think you'll also really enjoy Uprooted. Great story with really fascinating world-building.
