Fall Into Fantasy (+ Giveaways)

If you've read my blog before, you might know that I'm an eclectic reader. I gravitate toward certain genres, but I read from so many different sections of the bookstore. But there's one genre I used to barely read: fantasy. I didn't grow up reading it and almost avoided it completely. Whether it was my misconceptions about the genre or just that my interests lay elsewhere, I don't have a robust background reading fantasy.

Recently, however, I had to admit something: fantasy is now one of my favorite genres. I don't know exactly when the change occurred (although I have my suspicions, as you'll see tomorrow) but I've totally fallen for fantasy. Alexa and I have since bonded over our love of fantasy. If I'm the newbie, she's definitely the master. She's been reading it since childhood! Books in general have brought us together, but sharing a love for so many of the same books and series has sealed the deal.

Because we both love the genre and have very different histories with it, we've teamed up for Fall Into Fantasy. During this three-week long collaboration, we'll be fangirling about fantasy, reviewing some fantasy reads and sharing fun fantasy-inspired posts. Here are the books you'll be hearing about in the next few weeks:

I'm so excited to be hosting this event with Alexa, and we both hope you enjoy all we've got planned.
I never would have imagined that I'd spend almost an entire month talking about genre you wouldn't have found on my bookshelf prior to 2011, but I'm so glad that blogging has brought fantasy into my life.

We hope you'll join in by sharing your own recommendations and responses! So, let's get started: How do you feel about fantasy? Are you new to fantasy (like me) or a lifelong reader of it (like Alexa)? Who are your favorite fantasy authors or books? And if you've avoided fantasy in the past, what's been holding you back?

  1. Like you, I didn't grow up reading it. I basically grew up on contemporary, which is still my favourite. I still don't read much fantasy these days, I feel I can't keep up with it, but there are some great fantasy books that catch my eye from time to time. This sounds like a fun event and I hopefully I'll be able to stop by (if my memory allows it) during the 3 weeks to see what you guys are up to. Good luck and happy hosting!

  2. Harry Potter is definitely my favorite fantasy series! A close second would probably be Graceling. On my wishlist to read are the Song of Ice & Fire books by George RR Martin -- I actually do have copies since the hubby bought them, but boy do I wish I could find time to actually READ them :) One my wishlist to buy (& read!) are the Throne of Glass books :)

  4. I loved the Protector of the Small series by Tamora Pierce when I was growing up! Recently I read the Timely Death Trilogy by Shannon A. Thompson, and I really enjoyed that as well. I have been meaning to get around to the Mortal Instruments series though!

  5. Ha, the fairyland series is a collection of super cute adventure stories. It's more of a MG fantasy but I love it! Valente's writing is the very classic fairy tale-like, so I had a hard time originally. But in the end, I completely fell in love with it! Hope you are having a great time reading these wonderful books!

  6. I tend to overlook fantasy but I have read and enjoyed a few. Did you read Seraphina? I really liked that one!

  7. I LOOOVE fantasy. It was my genre of choice as a pre-teen and teen, although I loved it before as a child and I love it still. Favourite fantasy authors and books? OH MAN. How do I even begin. Tamora Pierce, Kristin Cashore, J.R.R. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin, C.S. Lewis, J.K. Rowling, Lewis Carroll, Madeleine L'Engle, L. Frank Baum, J.M. Barrie, Robin McKinley, David Eddings, Sarah J. Maas, Philip Pullman, Gregory Maguire, Christopher Paolini, Megan Whalen Turner, and many, many others but I will end there. I think I also devoured ever fantasy retelling that was published during my childhood/teenage years.

My fantasy wishlist is pretty extensive, and the Grisha series by Leigh Bardugo and the rest of The Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner (I haven't finished it yet!) are on it. Since you mentioned how much you loved Daughter of the Forest a couple weeks back that's also been added to my list.

  8. This is such a great collaboration! I'm with you on being a fantasy newbie, although I did read a bit when I was younger. I'm currently in the middle of Crown of Midnight and LOOOOOOVING it (totally worth the hype!) but the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy is, hands down, the reason why I fell in love with the genre.

  9. Well my favorite all time fantasy book has to be Harry Potter, it's the series that I read more times when on my teen years and still is my comfort read for whenever I'm in a slump or in a just really bad mood.

Oh, it's really hard to pick up only one fantasy book from my long wishlist, but I think probably the Gisha trilogy since I like series that are already finished and I can just maraton the books ya' know?

Great collaboration you two, can't wait to follow the posts for the next few weeks!
