Future People Better Love These Books

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Every week they post a new topic/Top Ten list and invite everyone to share their own answers. I'm so obsessed with lists!

Top Ten Books Written in the Last 10 Years
That I Hope are Still Being Read in 30 Years
Source
1 - 7. The Harry Potter Series by J.K Rowling - I didn't read these books until recently... as in the end of last year and beginning of January. I fell in love with the characters, the world, and the adventures. I now completely understand why everyone is so crazy about these books. I have a feeling that they'll still be loved and cherished 30 years from now, but this is me putting that hope out there in the world.

8 - 10. The Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins - I have so much love for these books! I know they are crazy popular right now, but I hope people are still reading them in 30 years. I love Katniss and Peeta, but I also appreciate the social commentary underneath it all. I don't know where society will be in 30 years, but I think these books present an interesting commentary on the world today.

Okay, I know that I basically cheated by just picking two series. But I can't help it! It just worked out so perfectly, and I was having a hard time coming up with other books for my list. I can't wait to visit everyone's lists this week to see what other people have chosen. Do you agree with my choices?!

  1. Definitely agree with both these choices. Speaking as objectively as I can (ahem), I think HP will last the ages. Not quite as sure about HG, but I'm hopeful. :)

    1. Yeah, I have a feeling HP will still be loved years from now. I'm not as confident on the Hunger Games, but one can hope :) I do think there is a possibility that the social commentary could help them but who knows.

  4. Yes and Yes! I actually added both series as a "duh" disclaimer because I wanted to be able to mention some other books! lol

  5. I was just thinking that this worked out pretty perfectly (7+3), when I read what you wrote. :) Great choices! I think that these books will definitely stand the test of time for a number of reasons——the engaging stories, the themes, the quality of writing... They go above and beyond so many others. :)

P.S. I took your advice about Mansfield Park on my Classics list and changed it to Emma. Thanks! :)

    1. I really do hope both stand the test of time! I think Harry Potter will likely age better, but I do hope that the social commentary aspect of the Hunger Games will make them relevant and interesting in the future. I'm glad you agree with the choices!

And I'm glad you'll be reading Emma! I think you'll have a much better experience with that if you haven't read all of Austen - it's fantastic! Don't get me wrong, Mansfield Park is good too, but it wouldn't be my first Austen recommendation :) Hope you enjoy Emma, and I'm glad I could help!

  6. Doesn't matter that you only choose two series, because Harry Potter is the BEST and The Hunger Games were pretty good too.

    1. Glad you don't think it was practically cheating to choose two series! I agree that Harry Potter is better than the Hunger Games, and I think it's more likely that it will still be loved by future generations. I'm just hoping the Hunger Games age well, too!

  7. Ahaha, Hannah, I LOVE how you did this list! I always worry about how people would think of HP now since they don't have the nostalgia of childhood so I'm super glad to hear you loved it. :D

    1. Thanks Elena! Yep, I didn't have the nostalgia factor associated with these and still loved them. I can see how reading them during childhood would give you an even deeper love/appreciation for them, but I still count these as favorites! They're wonderful, even when read as an adult :)

  8. So I'm not the only one late to the Harry Potter train! I just started reading HP in 2010 and finished it up in 2011, right before the last movie came out. I feel like I missed out on a huge part of our generation's childhood by not reading them until recently! But like you said hopefully they will stand the test of time. I'm looking forward to rereading them all soon. :)

    1. I know what you mean about missing out! As much as I loved them, I'll never have the whole "I went to every midnight book release" thing to add a deeper love for them. I just read them, but I already want to reread them so I have a feeling they'll be loved well into the future!

  9. I love that the two series perfectly added up to ten! I read on another TTT post that only the last 3 Harry Potter books were actually published during the last 10 years -- can you believe that much time has passed!?! Makes me feel a little old =P But I think you can also rest assured that if the books are still this popular over 10 years after publication, I'm pretty confident that they'll still be super popular in 50 years!

    Here's my TTT: http://writergrrlreads.blogspot.ca/2012/05/top-ten-books-that-i-hope-are-still.html

    1. I didn't even think to check if the Harry Potter books were published in the last ten years. I can't believe it was only the last three! Oh well, I'll stand by my list. I only read them last year, so they still feel new to me. I think of all the books people have listed these are the most likely to still be popular - but only time will tell!

  10. I totally agree with your choices... I honestly couldn't think of much more than a couple series like this, so I didn't participate in TTT this week. I was a bit behind with the Potter love as well... I read them about 2 1/2 or 3 years ago, and I just loved them. Part of me is kind of glad I didn't jump on the wagon sooner, because I got my set super cheap at a local used book store and {the biggest reason} I didn't have to wait for each one to come out!

    1. I'm so glad I didn't have to wait for each book to come out. That was definitely an advantage of reading them after everyone else! I was having such a hard time coming up with books for this list, so I was happy when I realized that these two series added up to ten books :)

  11. YES. Your list is basically my list if I'd posted one... plus anything Jane Austen, because I need more people to understand her books aren't frilly romances & are actually hilarious & totally awesome.

I think HP will have no problem sticking around... I bet the movies are even rebooted in our lifetime. Not sure about THG, but one can hope!
