Off The Page & Into My Heart
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Every week they post a new topic/Top Ten list and invite everyone to share their own answers. I'm so obsessed with lists!
I really loved this week's list, but I tried to take my own spin on it with my list. Rather than posting a list of my favorite characters with no explanation (boring) or with an explanation (too long!), I've named each character (and their book origin) along with one of my favorite quotes from them. Hope you enjoy!
Top Ten All-Time* Favorite Characters in Books
* I don't know if these are actually my "all time" favorites because I'm too fickle to commit to that...
1. Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice: "There is a stubbornness about me that never can bear to be frightened at the will of others. My courage always rises at every attempt to intimidate me."
2. Gilbert Blythe from the Anne of Green Gables series: “I've loved you ever since the day you broke your slate over my head.”
3. Anne Shirley from the Anne of Green Gables series: "There's such a lot of different Annes in me. I sometimes think that is why I'm such a troublesome person. If I was just the one Anne it would be ever so much more comfortable, but then it wouldn't be half so interesting."
4. Fred & George Weasley from the Harry Potter series: "I suppose she thinks you don't forget your name. But we're not stupid - we know we're called Gred and Forge."
5. Abileen Clark from The Help: "You is kind. You is smart. You is important."
6. Peeta Mellark from the Hunger Games series: "Remember, we're madly in love, so it's all right to kiss me anytime you feel like it."
7. Sara Crewe from The Little Princess: "If I am a princess in rags and tatters, I can be a princess inside. It would be easy to be a princess if I were dressed in cloth of gold, but it is a great deal more of a triumph to be one all the time when no one knows it."
8. Death (and really Liesel!) from The Book Thief: "I wanted to tell the book thief many things, about beauty and brutality. But what could I tell her about those things that she didn't already know? I wanted to explain that I am constantly overestimating and underestimating the human race-that rarely do I ever simply estimate it. I wanted to ask her how the same thing could be so ugly and so glorious, and its words and stories so damning and brilliant."
9. Josephine March from Little Women: "I want to do something splendid before I go into my castle, something heroic or wonderful that won't be forgotten after I'm dead. I don't know what, but I'm on the watch for it, and mean to astonish you all some day. I think I shall write books, and get rich and famous, that would suit me, so that is my favorite dream."
10. Captain Frederick Wentworth from Persuasion: "You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago. Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you."
Would any of these characters make your list? Did I make any glaring oversights in leaving someone off?
The Twins! They were hilarious in the books and movies. ^-^

Ah I know! I just love them so much!
DeletePeeta, :D Awe, I love Peeta. And I'm so happy to see some classics, not to mention Captain Wentworth... :P
ReplyDeleteCheck out my giveaway if you can!
Always happy to meet another person who loves Peeta :) And I'm glad you like the classics - isn't Captain Wentworth such a swoon worthy character?!
DeleteWhee, Captain Wentworth! He's on my list, too. ;)
ReplyDeleteLoved your choices - I've never read Little Women, though I've been meaning to for so many years now. I feel like it's a huge oversight since I tend to love the classics. And people have always told me I'm like Jo!
Yes, you really should! Even if you don't love it, it's totally worth reading if you're a fan of classics. Jo is a great heroine!
DeleteAnd I'm so happy you commented - I hadn't come across your blog before but I'm so excited to find it. You've got a gorgeous design & I'm always excited to find more cool blogs to love :)
Oh the twins! And Gilbert! Total book-boyfriend material and great characters. The Little Princess is one of my favourite books but somehow Sara didn't make my list... sad.
ReplyDeleteAmazing list this week!
Glad you like the twins and Gilbert, too! Definitely book boyfriend material :) Most people I know prefer The Secret Garden over The Little Princess, but I've always had a soft spot for Sara Crewe!
DeleteI love the quotes you've put for each of these, they're perfect! Yay, Gilbert and Anne.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I am SO excited to meet another Anne & Gilbert lover :)
DeleteLove the quote you put for Peeta! It seemed to me that they didn't really depict his wit and charm as well in the movie as it was in the book. Great post! Would love it if you could check mine out: My TTT.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree about Movie Peeta! I really liked Josh as Peeta and didn't think it was his fault that Peeta didn't seem as witty. It was liked they didn't give him enough material to work with and just cut too much out! I'm a huge Peeta fan so that was disappointing.
DeleteIve got Elizabeth Bennett :) I used to love the movies Little Women and The Little Princess when I was younger.

Yay for Elizabeth! I think she's one of the most popular literary characters, and I'm so glad she's so well-loved. And both those movies are awesome - I still love them! The Little Princess movie always used to make me cry haha!
DeleteAnd thanks for following :)
I love these - and the fact that you did quotes -- brilliant! I have Anne and Jo and I was so close to putting Sara Crewe on my list. I would have had Fred and George and Gilbert too if I'd been doing guys on my list!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, our lists are so similar sometimes! I love it! And wasn't it impossible trying to narrow it down to 10 characters?! So hard to choose!
DeleteGilbert! <3 My first literary crush...ever! It almost made me want a guy to break a slate over my head and call me "carrots".
ReplyDeleteHaha me too! I totally wanted someone to tease me so that I could act all offended like Anne and then ultimately fall in love. He's such a good literary crush!
DeleteYou're the second person I see who has Jo on their list - I loved her too actually.
ReplyDeleteGreat list and I like what you've done with the quotes. I haven't read a lot of these, but now I think I will.
Oh, and Fred and George FTW!
Glad you liked the quotes - I was trying to mix it up a little haha! If you haven't read some of these, then I definitely recommend them all. They are all very good reads :) AND YES, Fred & George FTW!
DeleteI think this is my favourite list so far! Love the way you've done it with the pics and quotes! So many I agree with- I have Gilbert and Anne on my list (I cried so much at Gilbert's love speech!) and I love all your others too!
ReplyDeleteMy TTT: http://www.pocketfulofbooks.com/2012/04/top-ten-tuesday-favourite-characters-in.html
I'm so glad you like my list - and I'm so flattered it's been your favorite so far! It makes me so happy to see Anne & Gilbert on so many lists. They're such wonderful characters!
DeleteChecking out your post now :)
Great list! I included Anne and Captain Wentworth on my list too. Love all of the quotes- I actually used the same quote for Captain Wentworth. I loved that letter he wrote to Anne!
ReplyDeleteOh, that letter he wrote Anne was so amazing! I think I swoon a little every time I read it... :)
DeleteLooking at other people's lists is just making me sad I only got to pick 10. How did I forget Anne Shirley and Sara Crewe and Jo March? But of course if I had included them who would I bump? Great List!
ReplyDeleteI am feeling the same way! Everyone else's lists are making me rethink my choices and want to expand my list to like 50 characters haha!
DeleteI have got to read the Book Thief. Love the Weasleys and Gil, even though I'm not in love with that series (I know, I know!).
ReplyDeleteYes, you've got the read The Book Thief. I absolutely adored it! And yay for the Weasleys and Gil! Don't worry, I won't hold it against it that you don't love the series haha! Even though I do, I can understand why it's not for everyone :)
DeleteI agree with all of these! Love Elizabeth, love the Weasley twins, love Abileen, love Peeta!! Yay!! I still have to read The Book Thief..eep!
ReplyDeleteMy Top Ten Tuesday!
Ah yes read The Book Thief as soon as you can! It's so AMAZING!! Yes, all caps was absolutely necessary haha! I'm glad you agree with all of them - that must mean you've got good taste :)
DeleteGreat list! I know I'm going to be kicking myself all day long about the characters I left out of mine... Captain Wentwort? YES! Gilbert Blythe? Double YES!
ReplyDeleteI've felt the same way the more I look at other people's lists! I left off SO MANY deserving characters. It's killing me!
DeleteAnd YAYYY to the Wentworth & Gilbert love!
Oh! The Little Princess ... great addition!
ReplyDeleteMany of your characters were ones I enjoyed, but didn't make my list. You have excellent taste! :)
Thank you so much! I think I'd probably list different characters depending on the day... it was so hard to commit just 10!
DeleteFred and George :D And Liesel & Death! I have Liesel on my list too.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you portrayed your favorite characters by putting a quote there :)
http://thedailyprophecy.blogspot.com/2012/04/top-10-tuesday-8.html
I'm so happy about all the love for Fred & George and Liesel & Death. They're all such wonderful characters :) And I'm glad you liked the quotes!
DeleteOh! Such a great, full list! I had forgotten so many of these. LOVE your list so much, honestly. It gives me warm fuzzies. I like the warm fuzzies.
ReplyDeleteWARM FUZZIES FTW! This makes my heart very happy :)
Deletefantastic list! So many good characters to choose from. I had Jo March and Anne Shirley on my list. Abileen was a good choice as well!
ReplyDeleteThanks! And I know - they're are just too many characters to choose from! It was so hard to narrow it down to just 10.
DeleteSuch a great list! I'm so glad you included Death from The Book Thief. He alternately made me laugh and broke my heart.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's it exactly - "he alternately made my laugh and broke my heart." I think that summed up how that whole book made me feel. I loved it so much, but it was so heartbreaking at the same time.
DeleteGreat list! I love Anne and Gilbert but I (shockingly) have only seen the mini-series - never read the books - so didn't feel like I should include them in my list.
ReplyDeleteAH you've got to read the books! They're so good! But I'm still glad you love the movie versions of them - they're pretty true to their literary counterparts :)
DeleteAwesome list! I love the flour-splashed picture you caught of Jo March. That's her, exactly. :) And I love the way you include quotes. I'd have done that if I thought of it. I really need to watch the BBC prode & Prejudice, and I'm currently reading A Little Princess. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like the quotes! Yes, you've got to watch the BBC Pride & Prejudice. I know you're probably loving A Little Princess - it's so good!
Delete*pride (& prejudice) !
ReplyDeleteAnne is great choice! I only recently read Anne of Green Gables but I too love her. She's too cute for her own good.
ReplyDeleteAlison at The Cheap Reader
I LOVE meeting other people who love Anne! It makes me so very happy :)
DeleteSigh. Elizabeth Bennet. She really is so wonderful. I didn't read P&P until I was in college, but I've loved the BBC miniseries version FOREVER, and the book was even better. Love her, and am bummed that I forgot her on my own list!
ReplyDeleteAnd seriously. ALL OF THE WEASLEYS. Except Percy. He can go pound sand. :-)
Oh Elizabeth. She's the character I wish I could be... and kind of like to imagine that I am. While it was hard to just choose 10, it wasn't even a question that she'd be on there. I love her quick wit and fine eyes haha :)
DeleteAnd yes. ALL OF THE WEASLEYS, except stupid Percy, could have made this list. That's a family it would be fun to join!
Your quotes make my heart go pitter pat!
ReplyDeleteOooohh I lurve pitter pattering hearts... and comments like this :)
DeleteOMG, I love everything about this list. ESPECIALLY the quotes. No one but no one can make me swoon quite like Gilbert Blythe. I basically want to hug everyone here, I love all of these characters. Also I will now proceed to watch pretty much all of these movies...
ReplyDeleteHaha I want to watch all of these movies now, too! Looking up the images for the post to way longer than necessary because I spent FOREVER just looking through them all and reliving all the joy :) I see a movie marathon in my future. But I also need to re-read several of these books soon, too!
Delete"You is smart. You is kind. You is important." EVERY kid should hear that EVERY DAY....
ReplyDeleteAngela @ AJ Arndt Books Blog
AMEN. I completely, totally 100% agree!
DeleteFRED AND GEORGE! Ahh. I love them. They were so hilarious in the books, not so much in the movies but still pretty funny. Great list!
ReplyDeleteMy Top Ten Tuesday
Yes, I loved them in the books! They were still enjoyable in the movies, but not nearly as good as their book counterparts.
