Somewhere Pretty, Something Sweet
I’ve had a love affair with bridges for a long time. Ever since the Anne of Green Gables movie set the standard for me, I’ve adored the romance of a beautiful bridge. In the movie, Gilbert tells Anne, “It’ll be three years before I finish medical school, and even then there won’t be any diamond sunbursts or marble halls. Anne replies, a woman in love, “I don’t want diamond sunbursts or marble halls. I just want you.” That moment sealed it for me – good things happen on bridges.
I’m not a girl who wants grand romantic gestures. I may like reading about them, but I don’t necessarily want them in real life. No rose petal trails or hot air balloons for me. I always joked with the handsome one about my obsession with bridges. And I’d tease: “Take me somewhere pretty, tell me something sweet, and I’ll be yours forever.”
So I was both surprised and smitten two years ago today when he took me to Tallulah Falls. I thought we were just going to spend the day outside. We’d just had several days of snowfall (basically unheard of in Georgia), so it was a winter wonderland walking through the woods. Then, on a bridge overlooking a waterfall, with the sun just beginning to melt the snow on the ground, he asked me to spend the rest of my life as his wife.
For the life of me, I can’t remember what he said. He does,
however, like to joke about the fact that I looked at the ring and asked, “For me?”
And when I realized it was the ring I’d been dreaming about for years, it made
the moment all the sweeter. I should probably note that he wouldn’t actually
let me take the ring out of the box while we were on a bridge. Thank goodness.
My clumsy fingers didn’t need to be clutching a diamond while standing over a
body of water!
We got married just six months later, and the last year and
a half has been even better than I could have imagined. From buying a home to
adopting a puppy (and one day having babies!), there is no one I’d rather go through life with than him.
Awwwwwwwwwwwww what a beautiful post. I love the ring. I'm with you too btw on bridges. I love them. I'm always making my husband stop the car to take bridge pictures.
ReplyDeleteThanks Juju! And yayyyy for another bridge lover :) They really are the best!
DeleteWhat a gorgeous ring! I'd love one like it someday :) I love bridges too, but I love the snow even more, so your proposal story was really lovely. I always love hearing about love :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Renee! Yeah, a bridge and snow was such a great combination. I love hearing about love stories too - especially when they're real people :)
DeleteOh Hannah, what a sweet story! And I love your ring...it is really beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I love my ring, too, haha! I still look at it sometimes and smile at what a great job he did!
Deleteokay, first off I NEED TO READ ANNE! I think I would really like and everyone swoons over Anne + Gilbert. I really love bridges (except when they are all decrepit and you feel like you are going to DIE just crossing it but I digress) and I absolutely loved reading this post!
ReplyDeletehee, your reaction was so cute and you two are a good looking couple! I'm so glad you found the love of your life and that you're happy together. <333
READ ANNE PLEASE. You must, Elena! And yea, not a fan of decrepit bridges. But otherwise, love them!!
DeleteGlad you enjoyed the post! It was a fun one to write :)
Love this story. And Anne. And your ring. :)

ReplyDeleteThanks Judith! Glad you liked my reaction haha!
DeleteThis story just melts my heart. I love it! Your ring is gorgeous, and I'm so happy for you both.
ReplyDeleteAlso, ANNE OF GREEN GABLES! She was always one of my favorite characters. And I loved that series SO MUCH growing up.
Thanks Alexa! So happy for you, too, and you're upcoming wedding! SO EXCITING!

ReplyDeleteRandom thoughts:
1. Your ring is gorgeous!
2. I'm so jealous of your pretty hands. (Yes, I know this is weird.) I have short little fingers with tiny little nail beds.
Ok, I'm sure you're officially creeped out now. hahaha -- Love this story! xo
Thanks Magan!
DeleteI felt dumb putting the ring picture up but that was what I was crazy texting everyone after we got engaged haha so it seemed appropriate!
And I'm totally laughing about the hands/fingers thing! I'm almost 6 feet tall, so long fingers kind of come with the territory :)
Awwww...this is such a sweet story! Thanks for sharing. And I'm totally with you on the whole not taking the ring out of the box idea...that actually DID happen to one of my husband's friends who proposed on a pier...splash! Not a great ending to the story =P
ReplyDeleteNOOOOOO! Are you serious?!?!? That would be so terrible!!!!!
DeleteI think you should name your first born Tallulah!!!
ReplyDeleteHaha I think that might be a little too out there for the rest of the family ;)
DeleteAww, what a sweet story! I totally agree with you - I love to read about romance and even watch it in movies, but it's not for me! Grand romantic gestures make me uncomfortable lol. Thank goodness my husband knew me so well and proposed in the bedroom! ;)
ReplyDeleteYour ring is absolutely gorgeous! Happy Anniversary!
I love that you're not big on grand romantic gestures either! They really do kind of make me uncomfortable, even though I love reading about them. Most people think I'm crazy for saying that - glad you understand!
DeleteLove. This.
ReplyDeleteAnd Anne and Gilbert.
Sigh sigh sigh.
